City of Salisbury Fire Department – Fire Headquarters
This $8 million, 41,000-square-foot building for the City of Salisbury Fire Department Headquarters was completed in 2008. It was a design-and-build project that challenged the Gillis Gilkerson team to meet a variety of needs for the department, including incorporating office space, large equipment storage, living space for on duty personnel, and a training facility for new recruits.
“Our fire headquarters is an outstanding example of the kind of work that Gillis Gilkerson can accomplish. They were a partner in ensuring that the space was a perfect fit for the Salisbury Fire Department,” said Jim Ireton, Mayor of Salisbury.
Gillis Gilkerson worked closely with fire department officials to understand how important layout and design is to response time. Locating necessary equipment storage near waiting fire trucks saves precious time in an emergency. The masonry building has enough floor space for 15 fire trucks and emergency vehicles, and includes a five-story concrete tower to simulate high-rise firefighting simulations.
